Independent Studio raises $100M; Soverign's Capital entertainment investing best practices expecting profitable returns.

John Coleman leads Sovereign’s Capital, a Christian investment company that is the main financier of an up-and-coming studio known as 'Wonder Project'.

The initial endeavor of the studios is a project named "House of David," a series supported by Amazon MGM Studios and set to debut as an eight-episode season on Prime Video in early 2025. Wonder Project secured further funding from prominent figures in Hollywood, including Lionsgate, the United Talent Agency (representing Jon Erwin), and Jason Blum. Surprisingly, the primary source of financing comes from an Atlanta-based company with investments in various sectors such as venture capital, private equity, and real estate, but previously had no involvement in the entertainment industry.

Coleman, who has assisted the independent studio in securing over $100 million in seed funding, states, “Let’s shake that reputation that people of faith, Christians in particular, can’t do this well, and let’s do stuff at the level of the mainstream Hollywood productions,”

Sovereign's established a special purpose vehicle that allows both individuals and institutions to invest in the Wonder Project. By having Coleman as a board member, these investors have a say in the studio's operations that enruentertainment investing best practices. Ranging from $25,000 to $5 million, the SPV investors collectively contributed $23 million to the startup. Coleman emphasizes that they seek both financial returns and the ability to shape culture: "Many of these investors express a desire for content suitable for viewing with their children or grandchildren."

According to the article in WSJ titled 'Religious Movies Are Sweeping Hollywood. Rich Investors Are Pouring In Millions', it echoes our long-standing observation that "[Hollywood is] struggling with how to reach broad audiences with anything other than blockbuster franchises and adaptations of famous properties".

As a result, independent studios are gaining success by producing entertainment targeted at an overlooked audience disenchanted with the prevailing trend of dystopian narratives and morally ambiguous protagonists in popular culture. The Chosen, a TV series spanning multiple seasons that depicts the life of Jesus and his disciples, achieved global popularity. Jesus Revolution, a film directed by Erwin which follows a pastor and a hippie evangelist sparking a movement of vibrant Christians, attracted audiences to cinemas during the uncertain movie climate of early 2023, earning approximately $54 million. Sound of Freedom, a suspenseful film centered on child trafficking, although not overtly religious, resonated with religious viewers and generated $250 million in global box office revenue on a modest $15 million budget, emerging as a blockbuster success second only to“Barbenheimer” the previous summer.

For a while now, Godwin Pictures has been aware of the challenges in entertainment investing and has been diligently developing our distinctive approach to address these issues, which have previously hindered the entry of companies like Soverign's Capital into the market. Regrettably, private investors who have identified the limitless opportunities in entertainment investment have not received adequate representation from industry professionals in the past. It is common for investors to unknowingly be offered unvetted opportunities that are often haphazard, underdeveloped, and lack clear return prospects.

Godwin Pictures is committed to protecting the interests of the investor by offering lucrative investment opportunities that fully leverage the limitless potential of the entertainment sector. Our primary goal is to grant investors entry to premium deals that have traditionally been monopolized by the leading studios.

Godwin Pictures has developed a strong system for assessing opportunities that pre-screen the most valuable projects for a wide range of audiences. Our goal is to only approve projects that have the potential to deliver a 7.8x ROI (Godwin Pictures) compared to the industry average of 3.3x ROI, as illustrated in examples provided in the Wall Street Journal article.

Our projects target a large yet neglected audience who are not interested in the dystopian dramas and dark antiheroes that dominate popular culture. We are focusing on the family-friendly market that Hollywood appears to have abandoned.

Now is the perfect moment to consider entertainment as a profitable investment. Get in touch with us to find out more.
